Implement a regular cleaning schedule
5
Establish a routine for cleaning coops, hutches, and shelters based on animal density and weather conditions. Daily spot cleaning of dropping boards under chicken roosts, weekly or bi-weekly full bedding changes for rabbit hutches, and regular removal of soiled bedding from goat shelters keeps waste from accumulating.
Why It Works
Manure buildup is the primary source of odor and fly breeding. Removing waste before it decomposes in place dramatically reduces ammonia levels and pest attraction. Consistent cleaning is more effective than periodic deep cleans because it prevents the buildup cycle from starting.
Tips
- Increase cleaning frequency in hot or humid weather when decomposition and fly activity accelerate
- A wheelbarrow stationed near the coop saves time on cleaning days
- Morning cleaning is ideal — overnight droppings are the heaviest accumulation
