Use the deep litter method for chicken coops
4
Maintain a 6-12 inch layer of carbon-rich bedding (pine shavings or chopped straw) in the chicken coop and stir it regularly rather than replacing it frequently. Add fresh bedding on top as needed and turn the lower layers with a pitchfork to keep it aerobic.
Why It Works
Beneficial microbes in the deep litter break down manure in place through aerobic composting, which generates heat (useful in winter) and significantly reduces odor compared to thin bedding that saturates quickly. The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of bedding to manure is what drives the composting action.
Tips
- Requires good coop ventilation to manage moisture — do not seal the coop
- Do a full cleanout once or twice a year; the resulting material is excellent garden compost
- Not suitable for damp climates or coops with poor airflow where bedding stays wet
