Ensure adequate drainage around animal areas
4
Site animal housing on slightly elevated ground and grade the surrounding area so rainwater drains away from shelters and runs. Add a 4-6 inch layer of gravel or coarse sand to high-traffic areas that tend to become muddy.
Why It Works
Standing water mixed with manure creates the worst odor conditions and breeds flies rapidly. Mud also causes foot rot in goats, bumblefoot in chickens, and sore hocks in rabbits. Good drainage keeps the ground surface drier, which directly reduces both odor and disease risk.
Tips
- French drains or shallow swales can redirect water away from animal areas
- Pea gravel in chicken runs drains well and is easy to rake clean
- Avoid locating animal housing in low spots where water naturally collects
