Compost manure properly
5
Collect removed manure and bedding into a dedicated compost bin or pile located away from dwellings and water sources. A proper hot compost pile needs roughly equal volumes of carbon material (bedding, dried leaves) and nitrogen material (manure), adequate moisture, and regular turning for aeration.
Why It Works
Hot composting at 130-160°F (55-70°C) kills pathogens, parasites, and weed seeds while transforming waste into valuable garden soil amendment. Uncomposted manure attracts flies, creates odor, and can contaminate groundwater with nitrates and bacteria. Composting eliminates all three problems.
Tips
- Turn the pile every 1-2 weeks to maintain aerobic conditions and speed decomposition
- Cover the pile to manage moisture and deter rodents
- Check local regulations for manure storage setback requirements from property lines
