Position water sources away from the coop and high-traffic areas

5

Place pools, waterers, and any swimming water as far from the coop entrance as practical. Ducks splash constantly while drinking and bathing, saturating the ground around every water source. Positioning water in a dedicated corner of the run contains the worst mud to a single area and keeps the coop entrance and sleeping area drier.

Why It Works

Ducks track wet feet and dripping bills everywhere they go. If the waterer sits near the coop door, every trip inside brings mud and moisture into the bedding. Moving water to the far end of the run forces ducks to walk across dry ground before entering the coop, which naturally wipes their feet. This single change can cut coop bedding moisture by half or more.

Tips

  • Place pools on the lowest point of the run so water drains away from the coop, not toward it
  • Ducks must always have drinking water deep enough to submerge their bills to clear their nostrils — never restrict access
  • Consider removing swimming water 30 minutes before evening lockup so ducks dry off before bedtime
  • Create a gravel path between the water area and coop to further reduce mud tracking
