Build drainage pads under waterers and pools
Create a drainage base under every water source by laying 4–6 inches of coarse gravel or pea gravel in a pit slightly larger than the waterer or pool footprint. The gravel allows splashed water to drain downward instead of pooling on the surface and turning the surrounding area into mud. For larger pools, extend the gravel pad 12–18 inches beyond the pool edge to catch splashing.
Why It Works
Ducks splash aggressively when drinking and bathing — a single duck can displace several gallons of water per day. Without drainage, this water saturates the topsoil within days, creating a permanent mud pit. A gravel pad acts as a French drain, allowing water to percolate down through the stone rather than pooling on the surface. The gravel also provides a firm, clean walking surface for the ducks.
Tips
- Use 3/4-inch washed gravel or pea gravel — avoid fine sand under pools as it compacts and stops draining
- Dig out 4–6 inches of topsoil before adding gravel so the pad sits flush with the surrounding ground
- Add a layer of landscape fabric under the gravel to prevent it from sinking into the soil over time
- Rinse gravel pads with a hose periodically to flush accumulated organic matter
