Elevate waterers on platforms to reduce ground saturation

4

Place drinking water containers on stable elevated platforms like cinder blocks, wooden pallets, or brick stacks. Raising the waterer 4–6 inches off the ground reduces the amount of bedding, dirt, and droppings that ducks kick into the water while also preventing overflow from saturating the ground directly beneath. The platform catches drips and splash, keeping the surrounding area drier.

Why It Works

Ducks naturally dabble and dig around water sources, flinging soil and bedding into low containers and splashing water onto the surrounding ground. Elevation breaks this cycle — the ducks can still drink and dip their bills (which they must do to clear their nostrils), but they cannot easily shovel debris into the container. Less debris means fewer water changes and less spillage from displaced water.

Tips

  • Ensure the platform is stable and level — ducks are clumsy on land and can tip unsteady setups
  • The water must remain accessible for full bill submersion (ducks need to dunk their entire head to eat and clear sinuses)
  • Place a catch tray or extra gravel under the platform to handle drips
  • Cinder blocks ($1–2 each) make the cheapest, most stable platform
