Provide adequate run space to distribute mess
Allow at least 15–20 square feet of outdoor run space per duck — more is always better for managing mud and mess. Ducks concentrate their waste and water splashing in a small area, so larger runs distribute the impact and allow sections to dry out while others are in use. A run that's too small for the flock size becomes a permanent mud pit within days.
Why It Works
Duck droppings are high-volume and very wet compared to chickens. A single duck produces roughly 1/3 pound of droppings daily. In a cramped run, this waste accumulates faster than the ground can absorb and dry, creating anaerobic, smelly mud. More space allows natural drying, microbial breakdown, and even some grass regrowth between heavy-use periods. Rotational access to different run sections extends this benefit further.
Tips
- Minimum 15 sq ft per duck, but 25+ sq ft dramatically reduces mud problems
- Consider dividing the run into 2–3 sections and rotating access weekly to allow recovery
- Ducks are harder on ground cover than chickens — expect bare soil in any permanently occupied run
- If space is limited, prioritize drainage improvements and surface materials over adding more birds
