Allocate 8-10 sq ft of outdoor run space per bird

5

Provide at least 8-10 sq ft of enclosed outdoor run space per standard chicken. The run is where birds spend their daytime hours foraging, dust bathing, exercising, and socializing. Confined runs that are the birds' only outdoor space should aim for 10+ sq ft per bird.

Why It Works

Inadequate run space leads to bare ground (no vegetation survives heavy chicken traffic), boredom-driven behaviors like feather picking, and rapid parasite buildup in the soil. Ample space allows natural foraging behavior, which reduces feed costs and produces healthier, more content birds.

Tips

  • Free-ranging chickens still need a secure run for days when they cannot be supervised
  • Add enrichment to the run: perches at various heights, a dust bath area, hanging cabbage or treat balls
  • Secure the run from above with netting and below with a buried wire apron
