Provide 8-10 inches of roosting bar space per bird

Install roosting bars that give each chicken 8-10 inches of linear space. Use 2x4 lumber with the wide (4-inch) side up, or sturdy natural branches 2-3 inches in diameter with rounded edges. Place roosts higher than nesting boxes and at least 12 inches from the wall.

Why It Works

Chickens instinctively roost off the ground at night for safety. The wide, flat roosting surface allows them to cover their toes with their breast feathers in cold weather, preventing frostbite. Insufficient roost space forces lower-ranking birds to sleep on the floor or in nesting boxes, soiling them.

Tips

• Stagger multiple roost bars at different heights, spaced 12-18 inches apart horizontally so birds below are not directly under higher birds
• Heavy breeds (Brahma, Orpington) need wider bars and lower roost heights to prevent leg injuries from jumping down
• In cold climates, the flat 2x4 roosting bar is critical for frostbite prevention on toes
