Provide extra indoor space in cold climates
4
In regions with harsh winters where chickens spend extended periods confined indoors, increase coop space to 6-8 sq ft per bird rather than the standard 4 sq ft minimum. Prolonged confinement intensifies all the problems of overcrowding: ammonia buildup, moisture from respiration, boredom, and feather picking.
Why It Works
Chickens in northern climates may spend 12-16 hours per day indoors during winter storms or extreme cold. The extra space gives birds room to move, reduces moisture concentration (which causes frostbite more than cold temperatures alone), and provides space for indoor enrichment like scratch blocks or hanging treats.
Tips
- Ventilation remains critical even in winter — do not seal the coop to retain warmth; moisture kills
- Chickens generally tolerate cold well down to 0°F if they have dry, draft-free shelter with good ventilation above
- In hot climates, extra outdoor shade and run space matters more than indoor coop space
