Adjust space requirements based on breed size
4
Large fowl breeds like Brahmas (10-12 lbs), Jersey Giants, and Orpingtons need space at the higher end of recommendations: 4-5 sq ft in the coop and 10-12 sq ft in the run. Bantam breeds (1-3 lbs) can manage with 2-3 sq ft coop space and 6-8 sq ft of run. Standard breeds (5-7 lbs) fit the typical 4 sq ft / 8-10 sq ft guidelines.
Why It Works
A 12 lb Brahma physically occupies twice the space of a 3 lb bantam. Using the same space guidelines for all breeds leads to overcrowding with large birds or wasted space with small ones. Matching space to actual bird size produces the best welfare outcomes.
Tips
- In mixed flocks with both large and small breeds, calculate space based on the large breed numbers
- Always err on the side of more space rather than less — you cannot over-space chickens
- Large breeds also need lower, wider roosts to accommodate their weight
