Provide one nesting box per 3-4 laying hens

5

Install one nesting box for every 3-4 hens, sized approximately 12x12x12 inches for standard breeds. Fill with soft bedding (pine shavings or straw) and place them in the darkest, quietest area of the coop, positioned lower than the roosting bars.

Why It Works

Hens seek dark, enclosed, private spaces to lay eggs. Too few boxes causes competition, stress, and leads to eggs laid on the coop floor where they get dirty or broken. Interestingly, hens typically share 1-2 favorite boxes even when more are available, but having options reduces conflict during peak laying times.

Tips

  • Place nesting boxes lower than roosts — chickens sleep at the highest available point, and will roost in nest boxes if they are higher, soiling them
  • A small lip on the front edge (4 inches) keeps bedding and eggs from rolling out
  • Collect eggs at least once daily to prevent egg eating behavior from developing
