Provide 12-16 hours of light daily with a basic LED panel
4
Microgreens need 12-16 hours of light per day after the blackout period ends (usually day 3-5). A standard full-spectrum LED shop light or grow light positioned 15-30 cm above the trays provides plenty of intensity for compact, colorful growth.
Why It Works
Microgreens are harvested young so they don't need the intense light that fruiting plants require. A 6500K daylight-spectrum LED at 100-200 PPFD is sufficient. Too little light causes leggy, pale stems that topple over. Too much wastes electricity without benefit at this growth stage.
Tips
- A simple plug-in timer automates the light cycle and improves consistency
- South-facing windowsills can work in summer but produce uneven, leaning growth
- Keep lights close (15-20 cm) for compact, sturdy stems
- T5 fluorescent or LED shop lights ($15-30) work perfectly — no need for expensive grow lights
