Use the weighted blackout method for days 1-4

5

After sowing seeds, cover the tray with another tray (inverted) and place a 1-2 kg weight on top. This creates darkness and gentle pressure that forces seeds to push through the medium, building strong root systems and thick stems before they ever see light.

Steps

  1. Mist seeds thoroughly after sowing
  2. Place an inverted 1020 tray directly on top of the seeds
  3. Add a weight — a brick, book, or filled water bottle works well
  4. Keep covered for 3-5 days depending on variety (check daily after day 2)
  5. Remove cover when most seedlings are 2-3 cm tall and pushing up

Tips

  • Mist once daily during blackout if the surface looks dry
  • Pale yellow shoots are normal — they green up within 24-48 hours under light
  • Mucilaginous seeds (basil, chia) may need a humidity dome instead of direct weight
