Install secure fencing
5
Enclose the geese area with sturdy woven-wire or welded-wire fencing at least 4 feet (1.2 m) high. Bury the bottom 12 inches underground or bend it outward as a ground apron to block digging predators. Use mesh no larger than 2 × 4 inches so raccoons and weasels cannot squeeze through.
Why It Works
A physical barrier is the single most reliable line of defense against ground predators such as foxes, coyotes, and raccoons. Adding a hot wire at the top and 6 inches from ground level with a low-impedance energizer (0.5–1.0 joule) further discourages climbing and digging.
Tips
- Inspect the fence line weekly for holes, rust, and sagging
- Set corner and gate posts in concrete for long-term stability
- Pair fencing with nighttime confinement for maximum protection
