Use deterrents (lights, noise)

3

Install motion-activated floodlights and sound deterrents (ultrasonic emitters or recorded predator calls) around the coop perimeter. Position sensors 6–12 inches off the ground aimed at likely approach paths.

Why It Works

Sudden bright light and unexpected noise trigger a flight response in nocturnal predators such as raccoons, foxes, and opossums. Motion-activated devices activate only when needed, reducing habituation compared to always-on deterrents.

Tips

  • Rotate deterrent positions every 2–3 weeks to slow predator habituation
  • Use solar-powered units for runs far from a power outlet
  • Treat deterrents as a supplement, not a replacement, for fencing and nighttime confinement
