Use commercial waterfowl feed

5

Supplement forage with a balanced commercial waterfowl or goose feed formulated for each life stage. Use starter feed (20-22% protein) for goslings up to 4 weeks, grower feed (16-18% protein) until 10 weeks, and a layer feed with added calcium for breeding or laying geese. Non-laying adults do well on a maintenance formula at 14-16% protein.

Why It Works

Waterfowl-specific feeds contain elevated niacin levels (55-65 mg/kg) that geese require for proper leg development and overall health. Standard chicken feeds lack adequate niacin and may contain medications harmful to geese.

Tips

  • Never use medicated chicken feed for geese unless a veterinarian specifically advises it
  • Store feed in sealed metal bins to prevent moisture and rodent contamination
  • Offer pellets rather than mash, as geese waste less and digest pellets more efficiently
