Offer supplemental grains
3
Provide small amounts of scratch grains such as cracked corn, whole oats, or wheat as a treat or energy boost. Limit grains to no more than 10-15% of total daily intake. Feed grains in the late afternoon after geese have spent the day foraging on pasture.
Why It Works
Grains supply quick energy and extra calories, which is particularly useful during cold winter months when geese burn more energy to maintain body temperature. However, grains lack the balanced protein, vitamins, and minerals of formulated feed, so they must remain a supplement rather than a staple.
Tips
- Scatter grains on the ground to encourage natural foraging behavior
- Increase grain portions slightly in sub-freezing temperatures for added warmth
- Avoid feeding grains as the primary diet, as this leads to obesity and nutrient deficiencies
