Supply grit and oyster shell
4
Offer appropriately sized poultry grit free-choice in a separate container. For laying geese, provide crushed oyster shell in its own dish alongside the grit. Do not mix grit or oyster shell into the regular feed; let geese self-regulate their intake.
Why It Works
Geese lack teeth and rely on their muscular gizzard to grind food. Insoluble grit (granite particles) acts as the grinding agent. Laying geese need extra calcium to produce strong eggshells, and oyster shell delivers roughly 38% calcium in a slow-release form their bodies absorb efficiently.
Tips
- Use "grower" size grit for adult geese; smaller "chick" grit for goslings under 8 weeks
- Geese on varied natural terrain may pick up enough natural grit, but always offer it as a backup
- Begin offering oyster shell about 2 weeks before the expected laying season starts
