Ensure constant access to fresh water
5
Provide clean, fresh drinking water at all times in containers deep enough for geese to fully submerge their heads. A depth of at least 4-6 inches allows geese to clear their nasal passages and eyes. An adult goose drinks roughly half a gallon of water per day, more in hot weather.
Why It Works
Geese require water to properly swallow and digest dry feed. They also need to flush food particles from their nostrils and clean their eyes regularly to prevent infection. Without adequate water depth, geese develop clogged nares and eye irritation.
Tips
- Clean and refill waterers at least once daily, as geese foul water quickly with mud and feed
- Use heavy rubber tubs or auto-waterers to prevent tipping
- In winter, use a heated base or swap water multiple times daily to prevent freezing
