Ensure Protection From Elements
5
Position and design the shelter to block wind, rain, snow, and intense sun. Orient the entrance away from prevailing storm directions and place the structure on high, well-drained ground. In hot climates, add shade structures such as tarps or position the shelter under existing tree canopy to prevent heat stress.
Why It Works
Goats are highly susceptible to pneumonia when exposed to cold rain and wind chill. Wet coats lose insulating ability rapidly, and miniature breeds have less body mass to generate warmth. In summer, goats lack effective cooling mechanisms and can overheat above 80°F (27°C) without shade access.
Tips
- Check prevailing wind patterns seasonally, as storm directions can shift between winter and summer
- Install windbreak panels or plant hedgerows on the windward side for additional protection
- Provide shade in the pasture area as well, not only inside the shelter
