Maintain appropriate animal density
4
Keep animal numbers at or below recommended stocking densities for your available space. Chickens need at least 4 sq ft per bird inside the coop and 8-10 sq ft per bird in the run. Miniature goats need at least 200 sq ft of outdoor space per animal. Rabbits need 6-8 sq ft of hutch space each.
Why It Works
Overcrowding concentrates waste in a small area, making odor and fly control nearly impossible regardless of how diligently you clean. Fewer animals per square foot means manure is distributed more thinly, dries faster, and is easier to manage.
Tips
- If odor becomes a persistent problem despite good management, reducing animal numbers is often the most effective solution
- Local ordinances typically cap animal numbers; staying well below the maximum makes waste management much easier
