Buff out white marks with a toothpaste and baking soda paste

3

Mix equal parts non-gel white toothpaste and baking soda into a paste, apply it to a soft damp cloth, and gently rub the white ring following the wood grain for about one minute. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and buff dry.

Why It Works

White toothpaste contains mild abrasives like calcium carbonate or hydrated silica that gently scuff away the cloudy, moisture-damaged layer of finish without cutting into the wood beneath. Baking soda adds extra mild abrasive action. Together they remove just enough of the damaged surface to restore clarity.

Tips

  • Use only plain white non-gel toothpaste — gel formulas lack the abrasive particles
  • Apply very light pressure to avoid scratching through the finish
  • Always rub with the grain, never in circles
  • Test in a hidden spot first, as this method can dull high-gloss finishes
  • Best suited for superficial marks — deep or old rings may need the iron method instead
